Connecticut is known for some of the nation’s safest communities, and there are many safe places statewide to raise a family. The FBI’s latest crime report says the violent crime rate in Connecticut is 30 percent lower than the national average.
Safewise, a home security and safety advice website, released its rankings of the 50 safest cities in Connecticut on Monday. According to the data, the Nutmeg State’s 50 safest cities are 65 percent safer than the nation as a whole.
Fairfield County controlled the top of the list, with four of the five safest communities in the state residing in the county. Six of the 10 safest communities in the state are located in Fairfield County. (Subscribe to your local patch in Connecticut for the latest breaking news and our daily newsletters.)
To compile the data, Safewise reviewed eliminated cities with less than 5,000 residents and cities that did not submit a complete crime report to the FBI. Then the group narrowed it down to the number of reported violent and property crimes and calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people.
